Prairies of North America with Emphasis on the Tallgrass prairies of Ohio and Making a Recipe for a Prairie Garden

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: In this presentation, Guy will examine the origin, make-up and occurrences of the tallgrass prairies of North America and specifically, the tallgrass prairies of Ohio. Included will be a detailed description of how to go about making a prairie garden whether only a few square yards or several acres in size. Lastly, he will take a look at the benefits of having a tallgrass prairie garden from the beauty of the plants themselves to the diversity of wildlife such prairie gardens attract.

Guy L. Denny is an interpretive naturalist, writer and photographer with a wealth of knowledge about the natural history of Ohio. Mr. Denny retired in 1999 from his position as Chief of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Natural Areas and Preserves after a professional career spanning 33 years of public service. As Chief of DNAP, he was responsible for administering the state's natural areas and scenic rivers programs. He is author of several booklets and articles on Ohio natural history and is past editor of the DNAP Newsletter in which he published numerous articles and photographs. His most recent publication is the Prairie Penninsula which he co-authored with Cleveland photographer Gary Meszaros. Mr. Denny has served on several boards including the Natural Resources Advisory Council for the Clean Ohio Fund, Midwest Biodiversity Institute, the Ohio Environmental Council, Trust for Public Lands, Scenic Ohio, the Friends of the Governor's Residence and Heritage Garden and the Brown Family Environmental Center at Kenyon College. He is the current President of the Ohio Natural Areas and Preserves Association which he helped establish in 2011. He resides on a small farm in Knox County with a magnificent 20-22 acre tallgrass prairie he created.
